Write it Sloppy and Write it Fancy

Looking for alternate renderings of your last name? Write it in a sloppy or fancy fashion and then ask two or three people to read your handwriting.

You might be surprised at the results and you may get some new search terms to put in those "last name" boxes when searching.

  1. Often "fancy" is more difficult to read than plain! My grandfather and his brother were census enumerators in 1930. Brother had taken courses in accounting and had fancy handwriting; my grandfather's handwriting was rather plain. There are more transcription errors on the brother's census pages than there are for my grandfathers!
