Notes Off to the Side

If you must make a notation or annotation on a copy of a document or record, make it off to the side and not in the actual text or image of the document. You don't want someone else thinking your comments were actually a part of the original, especially if your comments are handwritten.

  1. My ancestor, Samuel Camp, had one wife, Mary Banks. However in many online trees, a second wife appears named Margaretta Wherry. Miss Wherry was the keeper of the Camp family history and I feel sure that someone wrote her name on some papers as the source of family records. Later someone must have thought she was a wife. They failed to check the age difference -- Samuel died before Margaretta was born!
