Do You Look for a Deed After the Widow Dies?

One of my ancestors died in Maryland in 1817 leaving some real property to his wife. It dawned on me today while looking for information on other family in the same area that I should look for some sort of quit claim deed executed by her heirs after her death. There may not have been a probate, but her heirs may have quit claimed the property after she died.

  1. I've been able to find some really good genealogical information in land records. When you see Mama selling property you can bet that Papa has passed on; likewise, when you start seeing the children executing transactions on that property, you know that Mama has joined Papa. When they lease minerals or they grant ROW for a pipe line, etc. you'll find their names, addresses, and I've even seen Social Security Numbers.
