Vowels Can Go Many Ways

Remember that in a word or name the vowels can get pronounced in a wide variety of ways. Variant pronunciations can result in variant spellings. And sometimes, based upon regional accents, extra consonant sounds can be inserted between, or in place of, vowels.

  1. This is mainly true in English. I foresee greater problems with it as English fades from usage in the USA. Even so, Germans encountered the same problem with vowels (and some consonants) when Immigration "heard" them say their names. I think often many only guessed at what the name was. Certainly was the case in my lineage.
