Anniversary Notice?

If a set of relatives lived to have been married fifty or more years, have you searched for an announcement of their anniversary in the newspaper? The item may have made the social pages and may provide clues as to where various family members lived at the time--in addition to other details.

  1. Sad thing is, very few newspapers will let you see anything or you have to pay online to see any.

  2. Michael,

Our local historical society has lots of old newspapers on microfilm. I was surprised to see all the anniversary announcements - complete with photos of the happy couple - not just in small town papers, but city editions as well. Your reminder couldn't be more timely! :o)

    1. That's a good point, Laura. Sometimes I ignore city newspapers when working on my in-laws from Chicago, thinking that "they can't have appeared" in the newspaper. That's not necessarily true. So I got a reminder here as well ;-)

  3. After reading your post on using Chronicling America I found a newspaper article about an ancestor celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary! Wow it was loaded with family info, some of which was new to me.
Thank you Michael for reminding me to use that fabulous site!
