A Femme Covert

This phrase typically refers to a married woman and one whose legal rights are controlled by her husband.

  1. Along these same lines, I have run across several women (I think gravestones and cemetery listings) listed as "consort of 'male person'." In some cases I had thought they were married, but "consort" seems to have an "unmarried" connotation to me. Please clarify this term and why would they use that instead of "wife?"
